Late night love songs with Mike

A few of the really good love songs...

Sometimes travelling home late at night bugs me. It's either, too many people - or no body at all. Can't tell which I prefer better. But till I learn how to drive, my ezlink card and Mike (mp3 player) is my best companion for late night trips.

Music is good for the soul. Hillsongs makes one want to bop around and shout it out, jazzy love songs puts one in the mood for a lounging lazy weekend at the beach or just on the couch.

Our movie outings seem to generate a lot of response. From the really young adults to the more matured ones in our church. Everyone seems to be really nice and after a good show, all around, smiles can be seen. The last one, Superman Returns, generated 23 people (around there I think) with people from East and West districts, Ignyte and DL... even some of Fifi's colleagues and oikos. Thought it was fun, though not much interaction - a given for movie outings. Thought that maybe more of these fun activities can be organized. Say a day out at the beach, or some fun and games and picnics and bbqs... but it's kinda difficult if the group is so huge! Well, this is just the start of something good I guess! Next stop: Pirates of the Carribean 2. Once again thought of forming up a group consisting of these ones, to plan activites for single adults and what have you. Today heard from colleague Kylie that she's involved in one of those single christian adults group, agape oikos. =) sounds fun! As she said, not many single adults out there are aware that there are such channels available to meet fun, new people! Just sticking to your own posse in church won't help your single life much. Well, God works in mysterious ways for some. I'm happy to see people in love! As I am... But love is complicated, there has to be many factors for love to occur, which I've narrowed down below. Perhaps fragile love is not so blind, after all.

1. Both parties must be able to meet each other and speak the same language.
At very least, we have an assumption that preferably, we will fall in love with someone who speaks the same lingo as us. Don't even talk about 'wavelength' here... which, for most people, is also a given.

2. Like each other.
Before falling in love, we must take a look at ourselves (Be your better self!) and see, hummm... can I live with THIS? Can he live with this...? Nowadays, a valuable asset is the ability to make money, or being a wise financial planner. If he is not one now, do you see the potential in him to be one in the future? And if not, are you able to accept it? Things like these come to my mind... if the person (let's say a friend) has some qualities that you are unable to like/accept for whatever reason, then , please, don't think any further.

3. Same core belief system
Definitely this is something that most of us have to have in a partner of choice. If this can be compromised, it speaks volumes about your own desperation, your own character, and your own beliefs. Not even talking about spiritual beliefs here, though I am of the opinion that a believer is a definite for me. Core beliefs and values like - I want kids. I don't smoke. I like dogs/cats. I go to church on Saturday evenings... ... True, love involves sacrifice. But just for one person, are you willing to change your whole being? Then I am scared that the person does not even know who he is loving. Be yourself, be confident in what you believe in. If the person rejects you based on these, I'm sure many others will come forward. After all, love is not skin deep. Sometimes beliefs are more important than anything else. They should be something you care about enough to die for. For if anyone does not believe in anything enough to die for, then life is not worth living.

=) Just a few pensive thoughts for the day.

Meanwhile, after eating d24, 101 and what have you type of durians last Sunday, my mouth is craving for something sweet, custardy and smelly. And the very delicious photos are up!

Wherever I am

When you're down and troubled
And you need a helping hand
And nothing, whoa nothing is going right.
Close your eyes and think of me
And soon I will be there
To brighten up even your darkest nights.

You just call out my name,
And you know wherever I am
Ill come running, oh yeah baby
To see you again.
Winter, spring, summer, or fall,
All you have to do is call
And Ill be there, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Youve got a friend.

- Originally sung by James Taylor.

I think it's amazing how sometimes, certain things remind you of a particular person or a particular moment in time where things are fondly remembered. Others remind you of God and how He has brought you through things and only you know how much He loves you. Trust in His timing. Some people say that if there is no suffering, how can we know what blessing is.

I've been reminded of what I have become through Jesus - humbly, not through any merit of my own... That He has decided to use me. But often, as all of us, we take His love for granted. I've been told many times that it's the anointing of God that causes me to be successful in all that I do (so far) and, even being an anointed leader sets me up for success, at least in where ministry is concerned. I was chatting today and mentioned that if ever, I knew that the anointing of God left me, I would immediately step down. There's nothing worse than seeing what you have built crumble before your very eyes. And I am of the opinion that leaders must be anointed by God, not Man. It's very obvious whether one is, or not. I realise how important it is to build trust. Sometimes I fail to recognize my birthright and walk in the shadows. For the right to lead is earned, not given. I'm glad that within my circle, I can be a mouthpiece of the overflow. It's hard at times to move forward when it seems that even the people around you don't seem to understand.

But for me, I hope to be the one who does, understand, somehow. At least, I try.

It's interesting how we analyse people. Learnt that the 'vibe' you give is important, almost indispensable for trust, and leadership authority, to be gained. Some people are so natural you like them almost instantaneously. For me, I'd feel bad if I can't spend enough time with all my friends (love language is time) , so relative to this point I tend to keep people at arms' length, or only choose to share hurts to a select few as I do fear rejection and overt criticism.

With some people, the 'vibe' you get is complex, perhaps they are hiding within themselves. I wonder if they ever realise what it means to be yourself, to own your life. Some people seem happy but the vibe you get from them is not one of joy. Those who seem successful in the secular world, without a worry, but without Jesus, life is never truly joyful.

At least in my darkest moments I know I can call on His name.

Be your (better) self!

Usually when one stands out from the crowd to speak up, he invites criticism.

I knew I was born to be unconventional. Doing things in a different way, seeing realities from a different perspective from my peers. These 20% of people are... weird, not normal, not mediocre. Well maybe one day I will be able to drive a luxury car of my choice just because I think differently from the others. I knew that when I do certain things, pioneer certain choices, I stand the risk of being scrutinized. Right now, the things I do (so far) are successful and people look up to me, even older ones, who come up to me and say they admire my guts, my resilience.

But I know that if I make one small mistake and one failure, there will be many many people waiting to point their fingers at me and say that it can't be done. To me, failures in life are those who have spent years telling people 'you can't do this' without even trying for themselves. They assess the situation based on the negativities and with their limited vision, limit the people around them as well. I'm sure all of us knows someone like that. I've never been told what not to do, my career choices and lifestyle choices are mine to make. Of course, there are certain limitations, but I believe that my life is mine to own (and God's of course), no one can tell me I cannot do something just because it seems impossible to attain.

When I was young, preschool age, my parents gave me the choice of learning how to play a musical instrument. Being underprivileged when they were kids, they wanted to give me the best - and I could choose anything, from violin, flute, etc etc. I chose piano, and they bought an upright piano for me. Today... the piano is collecting dust on my balcony and being used as an alternative storage space. Perhaps some people would say that I've failed. By the way, I only managed up till Grade 3.

Making this choice has taught me how to make future, wiser choices in life. When I was young, piano playing was the 'trend' and probably a very good source of income too for the teachers! So, based on the limited information I have, I chose it. Along the way, I discovered my talent and interest for singing, drama, dance, and the arts in general. Although I never mastered any famous tune, I realised my passion for design. And if I was not given a choice to make at that age, I would not have realised what I wanted to do NOW. The piano is almost new, as none of my siblings had the interest to take it up. And there it remains, a reminder of my choice.

Some people still do not know what they want. Myself included... although I can envision the big picture taking place, I have no idea how to get there and what do I want eventually. But in making choices, I see that it is important to develop yourself first. In making life- partner choices - when choosing a boyfriend, this is something in our life that we have control over. If we attract loser guys, we run the risk of being a loser - like them, if each of our boyfriends were... loser guys. Thing is, do we realise this and change ourselves and our criteria?

If we do not know what we want, then don't blame God for giving us something we don't want.

I am introspective today because I've met many people recently , triggering my thinking. Everyone is always told to be themselves, but they never realised they can be their better selves! Choose to smile when you can frown. Choose to change when you know it's for the better. Why make choices just because your auntie said so, your grandfather said so, your friends said so... it's your life to live. And soon before we know it, middle age is creeping on us, and we find ourselves parents, but yet not really to grow up.

A glass of milk and superman

spirited advice: a glass of milk everyday.

Think my blog is going to become those health freaks' blog.

Today I envisioned myself cooking those organic food for my children and having a macrobiotic diet. Nah... I'm not so disciplined. Still love my chicken curry beehoon and curry puff and bbq chicken wings...

But yes, I do love milk. Although it's hard to get. If not for my fridge at home having a 2 litre bottle of meiji milk, I wouldn't get my nutrition. It's important for tall people like me to build up my bones. Read that calcium supplements doesn't work at all! =(

Well...

Apart from my detox regime, hope to drink a glass of milk daily. Plus eggs. Eggs are really good too. Rich in nutrients.

Superman Returns. Did like the movie, it somehow grows on you... though I remember one part I was feeling really bored.

The part I liked the best was the piano-part... where the mean bouncer guy plays the tune with Jason... and then... gets killed by the piano, hahaha...

Plus Lois murmuring ."I forgot how warm you are."

And Richard, her 'fiancee'... I thought it incredibly corny to have her marrying an X-men. Was that why Scott died so fast, so that he could film this one? Anyways thought James Marsden looked great in the show, better than his unkempt character in X3.

Detox : My personal plan

I am quite a health freak as I'd like to know what goes into my food before eating it... That said, I've been on a detox (not strict though) for the last 3 weeks and here is my personal plan!

PS: I've lost (unintentionally) 1.5 KG!!
Uhh, it's good for me not to lose too much because as you can see from the photos, I'm categorized as 'slim', already. Still it feels good to lose abit of baby fat.
First 5 days : Lost 1 KG, put back half.
Next 2 weeks(not so strict): Lost 1 KG!!!

Total loss so far: 1.5 KG
Side Effects
Good: Tend to sleep longer but peaceful sleep with no nightmares and deep sleep (I'm usually a light sleeper!)
Good hair days! more often than not! Hair seems to be growing lustrous and thickly, too!
Feel more healthy overall.

Bad: Mouth ulcers (don't know if due to heatiness after the first 5 days of strict routine)
Mood swings - (Heard also because ulcer medication causes mood swings)
Cravings for food...

The spirited Detox plan!

Here, my detox plan made easy. Really easy.
Just remember these simple steps.

Fruits - Eat at least 3 servings a day of different fruits. After a while, will get craving for fruit.
Try different fruits such as water chestnuts, guava, banana, soursop, pineapple etc all found at the local fruit store.

When eating out, bear in mind you can only drink:
1. Water.
2. Green Tea (no sugar preferred)
3. Fruit juices, fresh

No coffee or tea... but if addicted, try to limit to one a week.

Food: Follow the simple regime of no oily, no fried, no spicy. No red meat (Duck also red meat)...
Just simple fish and chicken, lots of tofu, yogurt, veggies, clear soups. At food court, go for the yong tau foo with lots of tofu.

Yogurt is easily available nowadays. Try yami yogurt or meiji ones are delish!

Subway is a good choice just go easy on the dressing.

Cheese and crackers and good snacks, so are muesli bars.

There you have it, my simple detox plan.

And you will find your fats eliminated!

=)

Not too sweet...

For those of you who adore Fisherman's Friend, or drink Diet Coke because apparently seems to be calorie-free and sugar-free.

Yesterday advised my friend against drinking Coke Light during dinnertime because of the possible side effects.

Not many people know this but you see, Coke Light contains 'phenylalanine'... Maybe some would ask, what in the world is that? It's a form of artificial sweetener known as ASPARTAME (Check the ingredients on Fisherman's friend or any sugar free gum or candy.)

Actually I got interested in it because I suspected a slight allergy to Xylitol - found in one Eclipse mint a friend passed to me. In a group of about 10 people eating the sweet, only I felt an itchy throat and started to cough because of the itch. In fact, the itch persisted and only after drinking some water, it got better...

I've read before that artificial sweeteners are WORSE ... not better, than sugar... as it can cause bloatedness, indigestion, etc.

A website says about Phenylalanine (which is found in Coke Light and I'm sure some other drinks)

Phenylalanine is a hidden danger to anyone consuming aspartame. Most consumers don't know that too much Phenylalanine is a neurotoxin and excites the neurons in the brain to the point of cellular death.
ADD/ADHD, emotional and behavioral disorders can all be triggered by too much Phenylalanine in the daily diet. If you are one in ten thousand people who are PKU or carry the PKU gene, Phenylalanine can cause irreversible brain damage and death, especially when used in high quantities or during pregnancy. Phenylalanine is 50% of aspartame, and to the degree humans consume diet products, Phenylalanine levels are reaching a dangerous peak.
It is important to learn about the ingredients within your foods, especially isolated amino acids like Phenylalanine. They are in combination within nature for a reason - they don't belong in isolated form for the healthy human diet.
Nutrition fact about Phenylalanine in aspartame:
The 1976 Groliers encyclopedia states cancer cannot live without phenylalanine. Phenylalanine makes up 50% of aspartame.
Phenylalanine is one of the essential amino acids found in proteins, but I am one of the believers that amino acids should be eaten in combination, not in isolated form. Nature provides amino acids in combination; only man isolates them for processing purposes.
Phenylalanine is found naturally in foods such as eggs, milk, bananas, and meat. If you are PKU (Phenylketonuric) or sensitive to phenylalanine, you will react to the phenylalanine in aspartame. You may want to get a blood test to check for this condition. Over the past 20 years, humans have become more aware of PKU reactions because human beings began using isolated phenylalanine to the degree it is harmful to some individuals, many as aspartame side effects. My suggestion would be to research PKU and phenylalanine extensively. Phenylalanine can be very harmful to diabetics.
Read all food labels and avoid anything with isolated amino acids. You want to buy products with at least eight amino acids in combination.
Which artificial sweeteners are safe?
